There is blood on the earth that denies ye bread;

Who said they were slain on the battle day?

（1）拿破仑政权崩溃后，斐迪南七世在西班牙恢复了波旁王朝的专制统治，1812年的宪法被废除，解放战争时期的革命战士遭到迫害。1819年，西班牙政府为镇压美洲殖民地革命，在卡迪斯集结近二万名远征军。一部分具有自由思想的贵族军官在资产阶级支持下发动革命，这首颂歌就写在那年10月。

（2）雪莱把战争明确地分为两类，把在“神圣同盟”的名义下组织的战争称为结伙行劫，而号召人们为争取和保卫民族的独立、自由、解放而战斗。
